Does your team have a BCD problem?

Business leaders are keenly aware of the meaning of BCD. Recently, Brian Knight blogged this:

BCD (Blaming, Complaining, Defensiveness) has gained a large following, not just in Focus 3 clients, but in people and organizations that have rallied to the call. It is has become an anthem for teams and lifelong motto for thousands of people around the world. It seems to gain momentum every day, and for that we are appreciative and excited. It can and does change the world one person at a time.

While that maybe a little overstated, what is clear is that blaming, complaining, and being defensive with an organization, classroom, or a team makes the group toxic. Who wants to be around people that display  these traits.

Knight goes to explain the consequences of BCD for the individual:

  • Blaming indicates you are irresponsible and untrustworthy.
  • Complaining makes you inefficient and un-enjoyable.
  • Defensiveness reveals your ego and your weakness.
